Whole body wellness reflects not only our individual lifestyle practices, but the practices and beliefs of our family, our friends, and our culture. Chronic illness is an imbalance which occurs when our genetic information is impacted negatively by our lifestyle and our environment; For example, we may have dormant genes for weight gain or inflammation that get switched on under conditions of stress, poor nutrition or toxin exposure.
In addition, we understand more and more about the impact of our digestive health and our microbiome ( normal gut flora) in switching good genes on and bad genes off, maintaining healthy immune function, mood, cognitive function, and more, and are able to diagnose and treat digestive imbalances that trigger illness. We are whole beings and each system of the body affects all other systems.
The Functional Medicine approach uses systematic assessment and therapies which strengthen the whole body; and all systems benefit from treatments. Often times, symptoms occur in separate parts of the body and seem unrelated; when in fact, multiple symptoms can be triggered by single nutritional deficit, toxin or infectious process. Using the functional medicine matrix, individual body burdens are identified and treated, leading to gradual strengthening of the whole body, and improvement or remission of chronic symptoms.
Dr. John Cline, MD, and Carrie Ingrisano, MS, FNP are both certified functional medicine practitioners with the Institute of Functional Medicine, with training in genomic assessment, nutritional counseling, detoxification support, hormone balance, and lifestyle management in addition to decades of experience in conventional western medicine. Uniting these great areas of knowledge allows for broad reaching options in the treatment of chronic illness.
